Pool Filter Repair or Replacement in Miami: Cartridge, Sand and DE

Back to Blog

What your pool filter does

Every pool filter has the same job: catch dirt, pollen, sunscreen, leaves, algae and other particles so the water stays clear. In Miami, filters see a lot of work. Summer storms wash debris into the pool, trees drop leaves year-round, and heavy use adds oils and lotions. When a filter is clogged or damaged, the water turns dull or cloudy, the pump strains, and sanitizer has to work harder.

Most homes here use one of three filter types: cartridge, sand or DE (diatomaceous earth). Each one has its own common problems and its own signs that a repair or replacement is due. If you are not sure which type you have, our guide to cartridge, sand and DE filters explains the differences.

Start with the pressure gauge

The pressure gauge on top of the filter is your earliest warning. After a thorough cleaning, note the reading. That is your clean baseline. As the filter collects dirt, the pressure slowly rises.

  • Pressure well above your clean baseline usually means the filter needs cleaning. Many manufacturers suggest cleaning when the pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 psi above clean. Check your filter's manual for its own guidance.
  • Pressure that rises again soon after cleaning can mean the media is worn out, the cartridge is clogged with oils and minerals that rinsing does not remove, or the sand has clumped.
  • Pressure that is lower than normal can point to a clogged skimmer or pump basket, an air leak, a closed suction valve or a pump problem.
  • A gauge that does not move at all may simply be broken. A gauge is a simple part to replace, and worth it so you can trust the reading.

Signs your filter needs attention

  • Cloudy or dull water even though chlorine and pH are in range.
  • Short time between cleanings, or pressure that stays high after cleaning.
  • Sand or DE powder blowing back into the pool, which usually means something inside the filter has failed.
  • Water leaking from the tank, the clamp band, the drain plug or the valve.
  • Air bubbles at the returns or air trapped at the top of the filter that will not bleed out.
  • A cracked or chalky filter tank from years of sun exposure.

Cartridge filter repair and replacement

Cartridge filters are popular in Miami because they are efficient and use no backwashing. They do need regular cleaning, usually by removing the cartridges and hosing them down. Over time, the pleated fabric wears out.

Replace cartridges when:

  • The fabric is torn, frayed or flattened.
  • The end caps are cracked or the core is crushed.
  • The pleats stay stained or stiff after cleaning.
  • The filter goes back to high pressure soon after a cleaning.

Other cartridge filter repairs include replacing the tank O-ring, fixing a cracked tank or lid, and replacing the air relief valve or gauge. A periodic deep clean with a filter cleaner can remove oils and minerals that a hose cannot.

Sand filter repair and replacement

Sand filters are simple and durable. They are cleaned by backwashing, which reverses the flow and sends the trapped dirt out to waste. Over years, the sand grains wear smooth and filter less well, or clump into channels that let dirty water pass through.

Common sand filter repairs include:

  • Changing the sand when it is worn, clumped or contaminated.
  • Replacing broken laterals, the slotted arms at the bottom of the tank. A broken lateral lets sand blow back into the pool.
  • Repairing the multiport valve. A worn spider gasket can let water bypass the filter or leak out the waste line.

DE filter repair and replacement

DE filters give the finest filtration, using a powder that coats a set of fabric grids. They need backwashing, fresh DE after each backwash, and a full teardown and cleaning from time to time.

Common DE filter problems include:

  • Torn or worn grids, which let DE powder into the pool. Grids can be replaced individually or as a set.
  • A cracked manifold, which can also let DE through.
  • Clogged grids that need a full cleaning or replacement.

Disposal of backwash water and spent DE has its own rules, so it is worth asking how your service handles it.

How often should a Miami pool filter be cleaned?

There is no single schedule that fits every pool. How often a filter needs cleaning depends on its type and size, how many trees are around the pool, how often it rains, how many people swim and whether the pool has had an algae problem. As a general starting point, many cartridge filters in South Florida are cleaned about every three months, DE filters are fully torn down and cleaned about twice a year with backwashing in between, and sand filters are backwashed when pressure rises and inspected about once a year.

Let the pressure gauge, not the calendar, make the final call. Clean sooner after a big storm, after a green pool recovery, or after a heavy weekend of use. If you find you are cleaning far more often than this, the filter may be undersized, the media may be worn, or something upstream, such as low flow or poor water balance, may need attention.

Repair or replace the whole filter?

Many filter problems are fixed by replacing a part: a cartridge, a set of grids, a gasket, a lateral or the sand. Replacing the whole filter makes more sense when:

  • The tank is cracked, brittle or leaking from the body.
  • Parts for your model are hard to find.
  • The filter is too small for the pool and the pump, so it clogs quickly.
  • You are upgrading the pump or adding a heat pump and want the filter sized to match.

Pricing for filter repair or replacement depends on the filter type, its size, the parts needed and the plumbing at your equipment pad. We quote after inspection.

How filter problems affect the rest of the pool

A clogged filter does more than make the water cloudy. It reduces flow, which makes the pump work harder and can trigger flow errors on heat pumps and salt systems. Our guides to pool pump repair and salt cell problems cover those effects. A filter that is not working well also makes it harder to recover from algae. If the pool has already turned green, see our green pool recovery service.

Frequently asked questions

What should my pool filter pressure be?

There is no single correct number. Note the reading right after a thorough cleaning as your clean baseline. Many manufacturers suggest cleaning when pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 psi above that baseline, but follow your filter's manual.

When should I replace my pool filter cartridge?

Replace cartridges when the fabric is torn or flattened, the end caps are cracked, the pleats stay stained or stiff after cleaning, or the pressure climbs back up soon after a cleaning.

Why is sand or DE coming back into my pool?

Sand in the pool usually points to a broken lateral at the bottom of a sand filter. DE powder in the pool usually means a torn grid or a cracked manifold in a DE filter. Both need repair.

How often should a pool filter be cleaned in Miami?

It depends on the filter, trees, rain and use. As a general starting point, many cartridge filters are cleaned about every three months and DE filters are fully cleaned about twice a year, but the pressure gauge should make the final call.

How much does pool filter repair cost?

Pricing depends on the filter type, its size, the parts needed and the plumbing. Blueviel quotes after inspection. Call (888) 401-7133 or request a quote online.
