01 / The symptoms

Signs your pool pump needs repair

These are the problems pool owners describe to us most often.

01

It won't turn on at all

Nothing happens at the timer or controller. This can be power, the timer or automation, or the motor itself.

02

It hums but doesn't spin

Often a failed start capacitor, a seized motor shaft or a jammed impeller. Switch it off at the breaker so the motor doesn't overheat.

03

Air in the basket or it won't prime

Usually an air leak on the suction side: a cracked or loose lid, a worn lid O-ring, a loose drain plug or a water level too low for the skimmer.

04

Grinding or screeching noise

Loud running noise usually points to worn motor bearings or debris in the impeller.

05

Water leaking at the pump

A drip between the motor and the pump body is usually a worn shaft seal. Fixed early, it protects the motor.

06

It shuts off or trips the breaker

Overheating, a wiring problem or a failing motor. Leave it off and have it checked.

What we do

We check the whole pump and how it connects to the rest of your system before recommending anything.

Replace shaft seals, capacitors, lids, O-rings and baskets

03

Clear jammed impellers and fix suction-side air leaks

04

Repair or replace unions and fittings at the pump

05

Replace failed motors where that's the better value

We work on major pool equipment brands, such as Jandy, Pentair, Rheem and Gulfstream.

03 / Good question

Why did my pool pump stop working?

The most common causes are a power or timer problem, a failed capacitor or motor, a clog in the skimmer basket, pump basket or impeller, or a water level too low for the skimmer to feed the pump.

Safe things to check yourself: make sure the breaker is on and the timer or automation is set to run, empty the skimmer and pump baskets, and top the water up to the middle of the skimmer opening. Don't open the motor or touch the wiring. If it still won't run, call us.

04 / Good question

Can a pool pump be repaired?

Often, yes. Shaft seals, capacitors, impellers, lids and O-rings can all be replaced without changing the pump. When the motor itself has failed on an older pump, a new pump is often better value than a new motor. We'll show you both options in a written estimate.

05 / Good question

Are pool pumps easy to replace?

Physically swapping a pump isn't the hard part. Getting it right is: the new pump has to match your pool size, plumbing and filter, and it has to be wired correctly for an outdoor, wet location. A mis-wired connection or an over-tightened union is a common way a simple swap turns into a bigger repair, which is why most owners have a technician do it.

06 / Good question

How much does it cost to replace a pool pump?

It depends on the type of pump (single-speed or variable-speed), its size and whether the plumbing or wiring needs changes. We quote after we've seen your equipment. Your estimate is free, and it's in writing before we start.

07 / Good question

How often do I need to replace my pool pump?

There's no set schedule. A pump is due for replacement when the motor fails or when repairs start to cost close to what a new pump would. Miami pools run all year, and salt air near the coast adds wear, so regular checks help a pump last.

If you're replacing anyway, a variable-speed pump can run at lower speeds for most of the day and usually uses less energy than a single-speed pump. Our guide to variable-speed pool pumps explains the trade-offs.

Common questions from Miami pool owners

Why is my pool pump humming but not running?

A humming pump that won't spin often has a failed start capacitor, a seized motor shaft or a jammed impeller. Turn it off at the breaker so the motor doesn't overheat, and have a technician test it.

Why does my pool pump have air in the basket?

Air in the pump basket usually means a suction-side air leak, such as a cracked or loose lid, a worn lid O-ring, a loose drain plug or a water level too low for the skimmer.

Can a leaking pool pump be fixed?

Usually. A leak between the motor and the pump body is most often a worn shaft seal, which can be replaced. Fixing it early helps protect the motor from water damage.

Should I repair my pool pump or replace it?

If it's a seal, capacitor, lid or impeller, repair is usually worth it. If the motor has failed on an older pump, replacement is often the better value. We compare both in a written estimate.

Is a variable-speed pool pump worth it?

For many Miami pools, yes, because pumps run year-round and a variable-speed pump can run at lower speeds for most of the day. We'll tell you whether it suits your pool and plumbing.

Can you replace my pool pump on the first visit?

It depends on the situation. Simple fixes can often be done the same visit. If the pump needs replacing, we explain your options, and once you approve we schedule the install as soon as possible.
